Summer holidays are almost over. Only the lucky ones who stayed here during the summer, are now heading to their holidays destinations but the rest of the mortals are starting a new exciting scholar year with all the excitement of starting new projects, new notebooks, new activities and new challenges.
One of my Spanish students, Cal has enjoyed some days in the South of Spain before heading back to Australia and for the answers that he has given me, it seems that he has had a wonderful time and he has practice his Spanish none stop with excellent results.
Read this interview to know about his adventures with the Spanish language, the places he has visited and his recommendations:
1. Tell us a little bit where did you go and why did you choose this part of Spain?
We love Spain for the history, culture, food and the language! We had been to the typical places travellers frequent but this time we wanted to do something different. El Caminito del Rey (Little path of the King) has been on my bucket list for a long time, and now that we're moving back to Australia we had to do it before we left. We wanted to spend a few weeks in Spain this time, so we also visited Ronda (Amazing!), Córdoba, Cádiz, Estepona, Nerja, and Cabo de Gata.
Cuéntanos un poco ¿dónde has ido y por qué elegiste esa parte de España?
Nos encanta España por la historia, la cultura, la comida y el idioma. Hemos estado en los sitios habituales donde van todos los turistas pero en esta ocasión queríamos algo diferente. El Caminito del Rey (provincia de Málaga) llevaba en mi lista de cosas pendientes mucho tiempo y ahora que nos mudamos a Australia, teníamos que hacerlo sí o sí antes de marcharnos.
Además, queríamos pasar algunas semanas en España así que también visitamos Ronda (maravilloso), Córdoba, Cádiz, Estepona, Nerja y Cabo de Gata.
2. Have you been there before? ¿Habías estado allí antes?
Previously we have visited Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastián, Alicante, Valencia, Málaga, Granada, Mallorca, and Menorca!

3. What did you like the most and you will come back another time and what parts you won’t recommend to go?
My favourite places to visit for the history are Ronda and Granada.
For food: San Sebastián, Madrid, Barcelona (to see Casa Batlló!), and for beaches:
Estepona and Cabo de Gata.
I don't think Cadíz is worth visiting (sorry Regina!) because it's just a big port town
and I think there are nicer beaches and food elsewhere!
¿Qué fue lo que más te gustó de tu viaje y volverías de nuevo y a que partes no recomiendas ir?
Mis sitios favoritos para visitar y clasificándolos por categorías son por la historia: Ronda y Granada.
Por la comida: San Sebastián, Madrid y Barcelona donde puedes ver casa Batlló y por las playas, no te pierdas Estepona y Cabo de Gata.
No creo que Cádiz merezca una visita ( lo siento Regina) porque es un solamente una ciudad portuaria pero creo que puedes encontrar mejores playas y comidas en otros lugares del sur.
4. Did you use Spanish to communicate with the locals? Did you understand them? Did they understand you?
From the moment I landed in Madrid I tried to speak Spanish with the locals. My partner was shocked when we landed in Madrid and I was asked in Spanish where we came from to which I replied 'de Grecia'. First she looked at me very confused, asked me what we said, and then told me how impressed she was for sticking to my lessons and being able to communicate with the locals. It was at this moment that it made the evening lessons and homework worthwhile!
¿Has usado el español para comunicarte con la gente de allí? ¿Los entendiste? ¿Te entendieron?
Desde el momento que aterrice en Madrid he hablado español con la gente. Mi pareja se quedó muy sorprendida cuando en el aeropuerto nada más aterrizar, nos preguntaron de dónde veníamos y conteste de Grecia. Primeramente, me miró con cara de no entender nada y me preguntó qué habíamos dicho. Después me dijo lo impresionada que estaba de que hubiera continuado con mis lecciones de español y ser capaz de comunicarme con la gente. Fue en este momento cuando me di cuenta de que las lecciones de español por las tardes y hacer mis deberes de español vale la pena.
5. Tell us some fun anecdotes while using Spanish to communicate with the local people.
My favourite thing to do is start with 'Necesito practicar mi español' (I need to practice my Spanish). This tells them you know a little spanish and would like to practice. Sometimes if I just started speaking spanish they would switch to English if they were fluent to try and speed things up. If they know you are trying to learn they take the time to talk slowly and explain things. Sometimes I got cocky and tried to speak entirely in Spanish. This didn't turn out so well when a young man in a carpark was trying to explain where to park our camper van. He was using the work quadrangle which certainly isn't a word I have learnt in spanish 😂. I turned around and parked in the middle of the carpark when we wanted me to park right at the back. He wasn't impressed!
Cuéntanos alguna anécdota hablando en español para comunicarte con la gente de allí.
Mi frase estrella estas vacaciones ha sido "necesito practicar español" Esto les indica a la gente que sabes un poco de español y que quieres practicar. Algunas veces, si empiezas a hablar en español directamente y ellos saben hablar inglés, intentan cambiar para acelerar el proceso pero si les explicas que estás intentando aprender español, normalmente empiezan a hablar más despacio contigo y te explican las cosas. Algunas veces, me he envalentonado y he intentado hablar solamente español. La verdad es que una de estas veces no funciono muy bien cuando un chico que estaba en un parking estaba intentando explicarme como aparcar mi caravana. El chico estaba utilizando la palabra cuadrángulo que ciertamente no había aprendido en español 😂. Finalmente, termine aparcando la caravana en otro sitio en vez de dónde nos dijo él. Creo que se enfadó un poco.
6. Tell us your favourite spot of the trip and recommend to the readers a good restaurant to feel the Spanish flavour?
My favourite place was El Caminito del Rey. The walk is beautiful and gets the adrenalin pumping. The food at La Garganta restaurant was exceptional. We recommend the croquetas with 4 sauces, the Guadalhorce tempura vegetables, and the chicken salad!

Mi lugar favorito ha sido El Caminito del Rey. El paseo es precioso y te hace sentir la adrenalina todo el camino. La comida en el restaurante la Garganta fue excepcional. Si pasáis por allí, os recomendamos las croquetas con cuatro salsas, las verduras tempura de Guadalhorce y la ensalada de pollo.
